What treatment options do I have for SIRVA?

SIRVA injuries often vary in severity and therefore there are different levels of treatment. The first line of treatment for SIRVA injuries will simply be to rest your shoulder. SIRVA causes inflammation and often the shoulder will begin to feel better and the inflammation will subside with rest. Your doctor may also subscribe pain relieving medication or recommend certain over the counter pain relievers.

If rest is not successful, the next step will often be to use steroids to treat the injury. The steroids treatments will often be by way of both injection and oral. Although steroids can be a very effective way to treat a condition and alleviate pain, they also can have serious side effects. A person should have a serious discussion with their physician about the effectiveness and potential side effects of taking steroids before beginning a course of steroid treatment. In the most severe cases, surgery may be recommended to treat your SIRVA injury. Obviously this is the last resort, however it can be an effective way to get relief. During the course of your treatment, both prior to and following surgery, your physician may recommend you see a physical therapist.
